The figures are the H3-24, four solid boosters and the long fairing: 63 metres on a 5.2 metre first stage. The thrust is approximate on purpose. JAXA publishes no total for the vehicle and no sea level rating for the LE-9, so roughly 12,100 kilonewtons is two vacuum-rated LE-9 figures added to four SRB-3 solids, which overstates what actually leaves the pad by an unknown margin.

The 16,000 kilogram payload is not a spec sheet claim, which is worth saying because the commonly cited citation for it points at a page that does not contain it. It is a flown result: in October 2025 an H3-24W put HTV-X1, a sixteen tonne station freighter, into the ISS orbit at 420 kilometres and 51.64 degrees. Encyclopedias circulating a 6,500 kilogram figure for the same vehicle have taken JAXA's geostationary transfer number and put it in the wrong column.

Cost was the entire justification for building it. The H-IIA it replaces was reliable and expensive, and it retired in June 2025 after fifty flights and forty-nine successes, which is a record almost nobody beats. H3 was meant to roughly halve the price using a first stage engine designed for cheap manufacture rather than peak performance, and that engine is what delayed the programme by years. The saving arrives late, if it arrives.

Nine flights, seven successes, two failures. The maiden flight in March 2023 was destroyed by range safety after the second stage failed to ignite, taking the ALOS-3 observation satellite with it, and in December 2025 another flight lost the Michibiki No. 5 navigation satellite. Replacing a 98 percent vehicle with a 78 percent one is the wrong direction to be moving in, and the commercial pitch rests on exactly the reliability the record is not yet showing.

The more useful way to read H3 is as a sovereign capability wearing a commercial product's clothes. Japan needs its own route to orbit for its own reconnaissance, navigation and station obligations, and would need one at almost any price. Winning commercial launches would be pleasant. Not depending on anyone else is the requirement.
