Leaving Earth
What does it actually take to get off this planet, and who pays for it?
Spaceflight is an engineering problem wrapped in a political one. The rocket is hard; sustaining the will and the money to keep flying it is harder.
How it runs
Orbit is a speed, not a height. Getting there takes an energy budget that dominates every design decision that follows.
The first era was national and adversarial, and it moved fast because two governments treated it as a contest.
Agencies multiplied, and the work shifted toward science, cooperation and long-duration presence rather than firsts.
Reusability changed the cost structure, and with it who can afford to launch. Commercial providers now fly most of the mass that reaches orbit.
What follows is contested: crewed missions beyond low Earth orbit, commercial stations, resource extraction, and a body of law and ethics that has not caught up.

Isaac Newton
Isaac Newton showed that the force pulling an apple down and the force holding the Moon in orbit are the same force, and gave astronomy a theory that could predict what nobody had yet observed.
Carl Sagan
Carl Sagan did real planetary science and then reached more people with it than anyone before him. Cosmos ran in sixty countries, and he wrote the paragraph about the pale blue dot.
Bill Nye
Bill Nye is a mechanical engineer who did stand-up on the side, became the science teacher of an American generation, and then spent sixteen years running the largest space advocacy group in the world.
Roscosmos
Russia's space programme and the direct heir of the Soviet one, which flew the first satellite, the first human and the first space station, and now runs on a fraction of that industrial base.
Space Missions
Sending hardware out of the atmosphere, and occasionally people. Seventy years of it have turned the solar system from a set of points of light into a set of places with maps.
NASA
The civilian space agency of the United States, created in 1958 in answer to Sputnik and still the largest single funder of space science, human spaceflight and aeronautics research.
Neil deGrasse Tyson
Neil deGrasse Tyson runs the Hayden Planetarium and has kept astrophysics in the mainstream conversation for two decades, as a working astrophysicist whose main output is public rather than published.
ISRO
India's space agency, built on the argument that satellites are development infrastructure, and the one that reached Mars orbit and the lunar south pole on budgets an order of magnitude below Western norms.
European Space Agency
The pooled space programme of 23 European member states, founded in 1975 from ESRO and ELDO, and the source of Gaia, Planck, Rosetta and the Ariane launchers.
CNSA
The civilian face of a Chinese space enterprise that publishes five-year plans and mostly hits them: a crewed station, two lunar sample returns, and an orbiter, lander and rover at Mars on the first attempt.
Blue Origin
Jeff Bezos's launch company, founded in 2000 and much slower to orbit than its rivals: a suborbital tourist vehicle, the BE-4 engine that powers a competitor's rocket, and the heavy-lift New Glenn.
SpaceX
The launch company that made orbital rocket stages reusable, and now flies more mass to orbit than everyone else combined. For astronomy it is both the ride to space and the brightest thing in the way.
JAXA
Japan's space agency, formed in 2003 out of three older bodies, and on roughly $3 billion a year the only one to have brought samples home from two asteroids.
Rocket Lab
Founded in New Zealand in 2006, it made dedicated small launches routine with Electron, then bought its way into spacecraft manufacture and started flying planetary science of its own.
Axiom Space
The Houston company betting that the ISS successor will be commercial. Four private crews flown so far, and modules designed to bolt onto the station first and fly free once it is gone.
Ethics and Policy
The rules for space, and the widening gap between them and what is now technically possible: a 1967 treaty, voluntary debris guidelines, contested resource claims, and no regulator at all for the brightness of a satellite.
Interstellar Exploration
Getting a spacecraft to another star. The nearest is 4.37 light-years away, which is 73,000 years at Voyager speed, so every serious proposal is an argument about propulsion, patience, or both.
Private Space Sector Overview
For most of the space age, reaching orbit was a government monopoly and companies were its contractors. Fixed-price service contracts and reusable boosters ended that, and the rules have not caught up.

Galileo watched four points of light move around Jupiter across several nights. Something in the sky was orbiting a body that was not the Earth, which the geocentric model had no room for.
The plague years at Woolsthorpe
Cambridge closed and Newton went home for roughly eighteen months. In that time he worked out the method of fluxions, the composition of white light, and the beginnings of universal gravitation.
The reflecting telescope and the first paper on light
Newton's reflector, built to avoid the chromatic aberration of lenses, brought him into the Royal Society. His first published paper argued that white light is a mixture of colors, not a pure thing that prisms stain.
Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica
Three laws of motion and one law of gravitation, from which Newton derived planetary orbits, cometary paths, the tides, the oblate shape of the Earth and the precession of the equinoxes.
Opticks
Written in English rather than Latin and organized around experiments anyone could repeat, it set the standard for how optical research was reported for the next century.
Halley's comet returns on schedule
Edmond Halley, who had paid for the Principia out of his own pocket, used Newton's methods to predict the comet's return. It arrived thirty-one years after Newton's death, exactly as calculated.
Neptune found where gravity said to look
Unexplained wobbles in the orbit of Uranus led Le Verrier and Adams to predict an unseen planet. Johann Galle found it within a degree of the predicted position.

Sputnik opens the space age
Korolev adapted the R-7 intercontinental ballistic missile to launch Sputnik on 4 October 1957. The R-7 design family has been evolved continuously ever since and is still the basis of the Soyuz rocket.
Sputnik 1 goes up
An 83-kilogram sphere circling the Earth every 96 minutes and beeping. Amateur radio operators everywhere could hear it, which was much of the point.
Project Orion proposes riding nuclear bombs
General Atomics studied a ship pushed by detonating nuclear charges against a massive plate. Freeman Dyson estimated such a vehicle could reach Alpha Centauri in about 130 years at 3.3 per cent of light speed. The physics works; the engineering and the politics do not.
The Space Act creates a civilian agency
Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act on 29 July 1958. NASA opened on 1 October, absorbing the NACA laboratories and their staff. Making it civilian rather than military allowed open publication and foreign partnership.
A thesis on the surface of Venus
Sagan's doctorate under Gerard Kuiper argued that the extreme surface temperature came from a runaway greenhouse effect. Mariner 2 confirmed it two years later.
Gagarin orbits the Earth
Yuri Gagarin flew one orbit aboard Vostok 1 on 12 April 1961, the first human in space. Valentina Tereshkova followed as the first woman in June 1963 and Alexei Leonov made the first spacewalk in March 1965.
Gagarin completes one orbit
One hundred and eight minutes, and the first human being to leave the atmosphere. Kennedy committed the United States to a lunar landing within six weeks of it.
The Partial Test Ban Treaty ends Orion
Signed on 5 August 1963, the treaty prohibits nuclear explosions in space. That removed the only propulsion concept then thought capable of a crossing within a human lifetime, and the programme was shut down.
Mariner 4 photographs Mars
Twenty-two grainy images showed a cratered, apparently dead surface. Every romantic account of canals and vegetation ended in a single data downlink.
Korolev dies and the programme fragments
Sergei Korolev, the chief designer whose name was a state secret while he lived, died during surgery on 14 January 1966. His successors had neither his authority nor his political skill, and the programme split into competing design bureaus.
The Outer Space Treaty opens for signature
Opened on 27 January 1967 and in force from October, the treaty bars national appropriation of celestial bodies, requires peaceful use, and makes states answerable for what their private companies do. More than a hundred states are party to it.
Apollo 11 lands on the Moon
Armstrong and Aldrin landed in the Sea of Tranquillity on 20 July 1969, eight years after Kennedy set the deadline. Five more landings followed. Twelve people walked on the surface and brought back 382 kilograms of rock and soil.

Two and a half hours on the surface, 21.5 kilograms of samples, and an estimated 600 million people watching. The programme employed over 400,000 people at its peak.
ISRO replaces INCOSPAR
The Indian Space Research Organisation was formed on 15 August 1969, taking over from the committee Vikram Sarabhai had set up in 1962. Sarabhai's case was that a developing country could not afford to buy satellite communications, weather data and resource mapping from abroad.
The N-1 Moon rocket is abandoned
All four N-1 launch attempts between 1969 and 1972 failed, most of them shortly after liftoff. The programme was cancelled and the Soviet Union quietly conceded the Moon race, pivoting instead to long-duration stations.
Ten states sign the ESA Convention
ESA was formed on 30 May 1975 by merging ESRO, which did space research, with ELDO, which built launchers. The ten founding members were Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
Cornell, then Boeing
Nye graduated in mechanical engineering, having taken an astronomy class from Carl Sagan, and went to Seattle to work on aircraft. He developed a hydraulic resonance suppressor tube used on the 747.
The Voyager Golden Record
Sagan chaired the committee that chose the sounds, images and music sent out on both Voyager spacecraft, a message with no expectation of a reader.
The Voyagers launch
Two spacecraft aimed at a planetary alignment that recurs every 175 years. They are both still transmitting from interstellar space, with instruments being switched off one at a time to save power.

A planetary alignment that comes round every 175 years let two spacecraft reach all four giant planets. They found volcanoes on Io, a cracked ice shell on Europa and an atmosphere on Titan.
The Voyagers launch as planetary missions
Voyager 2 left on 20 August 1977 and Voyager 1 on 5 September. They were built to fly past the outer planets. Reaching escape velocity from the solar system was a consequence of the gravity assists, not a design goal.
The Pulitzer Prize for The Dragons of Eden
A book about the evolution of human intelligence won the general nonfiction prize, which is not a category astronomers usually appear in.
Kessler describes the collision cascade
Donald Kessler argued that above a certain debris density, collisions generate debris faster than it decays, and the cascade makes an orbital band unusable. The mechanism is now the standard argument for deorbit rules.
Project Daedalus shows a crossing is possible on paper
The British Interplanetary Society finished a five-year design for a fusion probe running on deuterium and helium-3, accelerating to 12 per cent of light speed and reaching Barnard's Star in 50 years. It needed 50,000 tonnes of helium-3 and had no way to slow down.
The Moon Agreement fails
It declared lunar resources the common heritage of mankind and proposed an international regime to license extraction. Every major spacefaring nation refused to sign. Fewer than twenty countries are party, none of them with a significant space programme.
Cosmos: A Personal Voyage
Thirteen episodes on PBS, seen by an estimated 500 million people in 60 countries. It made science television cinematic and personal instead of instructional.
The nuclear winter paper
Sagan and four co-authors applied planetary atmospheric modelling to nuclear war and argued that soot in the stratosphere would collapse global agriculture. It changed the arms control debate.
The Science Guy, on local sketch comedy
Nye left Boeing to write and perform for the Seattle sketch show Almost Live!, where he filled seven unplanned minutes with science demonstrations. The nickname stuck, and so did the format.
Challenger breaks up after launch
Challenger was destroyed 73 seconds into flight on 28 January 1986, killing all seven aboard including the teacher Christa McAuliffe. The Rogers Commission traced it to a failed solid rocket booster seal and to a launch decision made over engineering objections.
Mir becomes the first modular station
The Mir core module launched on 20 February 1986. Assembled piece by piece and inhabited until 2000, Mir produced the biomedical record on muscle atrophy, bone loss and radiation exposure that every long-duration flight since has been planned against.
The pale blue dot
At Sagan's urging, Voyager 1 turned its camera back from six billion kilometers out. Earth occupies less than a pixel, suspended in a stray beam of scattered sunlight.
Hubble reaches orbit
The idea dated to a 1946 paper by Lyman Spitzer. Getting an observatory above the atmosphere took forty-four years, and then a repair mission three years after that.
Doctorate at Columbia
Tyson's research covered the structure of the Milky Way's galactic bulge and the chemical abundances of dwarf stars, after a bachelor's at Harvard and a master's at Texas.
Bill Nye the Science Guy
Five years on PBS, one concept an episode, delivered with fast cuts, parody songs and real demonstrations. It won 19 Emmy Awards and became a fixture of American classrooms.
CNSA is split out as the civilian agency
The China National Space Administration was created in 1993 when the Ministry of Aerospace Industry was divided, leaving CNSA to handle policy and international cooperation while CASC built the hardware. It has never operated launch sites itself.
The PSLV fails, then works
The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle failed on its maiden flight in September 1993 and succeeded on the next attempt in 1994. It became one of the most reliable rockets in service and the vehicle that carried India's lunar and Mars missions.
The Demon-Haunted World
Published the year before he died, it is the standing popular defence of scientific thinking, and the book people reach for when the argument is about evidence rather than astronomy.
Director of the Hayden Planetarium
He became the Frederick P. Rose Director at the American Museum of Natural History, the planetarium he had first visited at the age of nine, and has held the post since.
Ariane 5 fails on its first flight
Flight 501 broke up 37 seconds after liftoff on 4 June 1996, destroyed by reused inertial reference software that overflowed on a number the new rocket produced and the old one had not. Ariane 5 went on to fly until 2023.
Death at sixty-two
Sagan died of pneumonia, a complication of myelodysplastic syndrome. The Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell continues the work on planetary habitability.
The Rose Center, and the Pluto problem
The rebuilt planetarium reopened with Pluto exhibited among the Kuiper Belt objects rather than the planets. The International Astronomical Union reached the same conclusion six years later.
Bezos founds the company in near-total secrecy
Blue Origin started in September 2000, two years before SpaceX, and said almost nothing publicly for a decade. The founding idea came from Gerard O'Neill's orbital habitats: move heavy industry off Earth and leave the planet residential.
The ISS takes on its first crew
Expedition 1 arrived on 2 November 2000. The station has been continuously inhabited ever since, orbiting at roughly 408 kilometres and circling Earth about every 92 minutes. NASA, Roscosmos, ESA, JAXA and CSA run it together.
The ISS is continuously occupied
Since November 2000 there has been at least one person off the planet at all times. Over 270 people from 21 countries have been aboard.
Columbia is lost on re-entry
Columbia broke apart over Texas on 1 February 2003, killing seven. Foam shed at launch had holed the wing leading edge. The accident board found the same institutional pattern the Rogers Commission had described seventeen years earlier.
Yang Liwei becomes the first Chinese astronaut
Shenzhou 5 launched on 15 October 2003 from Jiuquan on a human-rated Long March 2F, making China the third country to put a person in orbit on its own vehicle. Every crewed Chinese launch since has used the same rocket.
Three agencies merge into JAXA
ISAS, which flew scientific missions on solid rockets, NASDA, which built applications satellites on liquid ones, and the aeronautics laboratory NAL became a single agency on 1 October 2003. Japan had reached orbit on its own in February 1970.
Huygens lands on Titan
The most distant landing ever made. It came down on a surface shaped by liquid methane and ethane, on the only body besides Earth with stable liquid on the surface.
Peter Beck founds the company in Auckland
Beck never attended university and had been building rockets since childhood. The bet was that miniaturised electronics and the CubeSat standard would create demand for dedicated small launches, rather than riding along on someone else's schedule and orbit.
COTS buys a service instead of a rocket
NASA awarded Commercial Orbital Transportation Services agreements in August 2006 on fixed-price milestones. It said what it needed delivered and let companies work out how, which is the opposite of how Apollo and the Shuttle were bought.
Pluto is reclassified
The new definition required a planet to have cleared its orbital neighbourhood. Pluto had not, and the Kuiper Belt was already known to contain other objects of comparable size.
China destroys a satellite with a missile
The anti-satellite test on 11 January 2007 broke up a defunct weather satellite and left over 3,500 trackable fragments, many in orbits that will persist for decades. It remains the single worst debris-generating event.
Falcon 1 reaches orbit on the fourth try
After failures in 2006, 2007 and early 2008, the fourth Falcon 1 made orbit on 28 September 2008. It was the first privately funded liquid-fuelled rocket to do so. The company was close to running out of money, and a fourth failure would probably have ended it.
Chandrayaan-1 finds water on the Moon
Launched on 22 October 2008, India's first lunar orbiter carried eleven instruments, five of them from foreign partners. NASA's Moon Mineralogy Mapper detected water and hydroxyl signatures, which is why later missions target the poles.

The podcast puts comedians, athletes and musicians in the room with scientists, and has done more to normalize astrophysics as small talk than any documentary.
Iridium 33 and Cosmos 2251 collide
The first accidental collision between two intact satellites happened on 10 February 2009 and produced more than 2,000 trackable fragments. Neither operator had manoeuvred, and nobody was responsible for making them.
Planck launches to map the microwave background
Planck flew on 14 May 2009 alongside Herschel. It measured the cosmic microwave background more precisely than anything before it, fixing the age of the universe at about 13.8 billion years and its composition at 5 per cent ordinary matter.

Nye took over the organization Sagan co-founded and pushed it toward policy advocacy, membership growth and flying hardware of its own.
Hayabusa brings back the first asteroid grains
The capsule landed in the Australian outback on 13 June 2010 with microscopic grains from asteroid Itokawa. The spacecraft had survived a solar flare, a failed reaction wheel, a fuel leak and seven weeks out of contact to get there and back.
Soyuz becomes the only ride to the ISS
The Space Shuttle retired in July 2011 and Soyuz carried every ISS crew until Crew Dragon flew in 2020. NASA paid Roscosmos over $80 million a seat, which was a significant share of the Russian space budget for a decade.
The Shuttle flies for the last time
Atlantis landed on 21 July 2011, ending 135 missions flown since 1981. The Shuttle never made spaceflight routine or cheap, but nothing else could have assembled the ISS or serviced Hubble in orbit.
A commercial spacecraft reaches the ISS
Dragon berthed with the station on 25 May 2012, the first privately built vehicle to do so. The cargo service worked, which is what made the argument for extending the same contracting model to crew.
Voyager 1 crosses the heliopause
On 25 August 2012 Voyager 1 passed out of the Sun's bubble of particles and magnetic field into the interstellar medium. Voyager 2 followed in November 2018. These remain the only direct measurements of interstellar space anyone has.
Mangalyaan launches for Mars
The Mars Orbiter Mission left on a standard PSLV on 5 November 2013 and reached Mars orbit on 24 September 2014. It cost about $74 million, less than many terrestrial infrastructure projects, and worked for over seven years against a six-month design life.
Chang'e 3 lands with the Yutu rover
Chang'e 3 touched down in Mare Imbrium on 14 December 2013 and released the Yutu rover. It was the first soft landing on the Moon by anyone since the Soviet Luna 24 in 1976.
Gaia launches to survey the Galaxy
Launched on 19 December 2013, Gaia measures stellar positions, distances and motions at microarcsecond precision. Its catalogues of nearly two billion sources underpin the distance ladder, Milky Way archaeology and asteroid orbit work alike.
Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey
The sequel to Sagan's series, produced by Ann Druyan and Seth MacFarlane, aired on Fox and National Geographic and won four Emmy Awards.

Nye argued evolution against a creationist at the Creation Museum, on the grounds that refusing to appear cedes the audience. Millions watched it live.
Commercial Crew goes to two suppliers
NASA contracted SpaceX and Boeing in September 2014 to carry astronauts. Crew Dragon has flown since 2020. Starliner has not settled into service, which is the clearest comparison anyone has between the two contracting cultures.
Philae lands on a comet
Rosetta released the Philae lander onto Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko on 12 November 2014, the first soft landing on a comet nucleus. Rosetta itself found molecular oxygen in the coma, which no model had predicted.
Roscosmos is reorganised as a state corporation
The design bureaus and manufacturing enterprises were consolidated into a single state corporation in 2015, replacing the Russian Federal Space Agency that had run the programme since 1992. The stated aim was to fix the quality control failures behind a run of launch losses.
New Horizons reaches Pluto
A world with nitrogen ice glaciers, water ice mountains and a convecting plain the size of Texas. Nobody had expected geological activity that far out and that long after formation.
The US legislates asteroid resource ownership
The Commercial Space Launch Competitiveness Act, signed on 25 November 2015, asserts that a US company owns what it extracts from a celestial body even though nobody may own the body. Luxembourg passed a comparable law in 2017.
Akatsuki reaches Venus five years late
The Venus Climate Orbiter's main engine failed at orbit insertion in 2010. The team spent five years working out how to do the burn on the small attitude thrusters instead, and it worked on 7 December 2015.
A Falcon 9 booster lands after delivering a payload
On 21 December 2015 the first stage returned to a pad at Cape Canaveral, the first propulsive landing of an orbital-class booster after a real mission. The first drone ship landing followed in April 2016, after several that ended in explosions.
Two insiders start a station company
Michael Suffredini had run the ISS programme for NASA from 2005 to 2015. Kam Ghaffarian had built and sold a large NASA support contractor. Between them they knew the station's engineering, its logistics and its cost structure.
Hitomi is lost five weeks after launch
A chain of attitude control errors spun the X-ray observatory apart in late March 2016. In its brief working life it observed the Perseus cluster once, and that single dataset showed the hot gas in clusters is far quieter than models predicted.
Breakthrough Starshot is announced
Yuri Milner committed $100 million on 12 April 2016 to research a laser-driven sail: a ground array of roughly 100 gigawatts pushing gram-scale probes to about 20 per cent of light speed, a 20-year trip to Alpha Centauri. Little of that money has been spent and the programme has published nothing since 2017.

One PSLV deploys 104 satellites
On 15 February 2017 a single PSLV flight released 104 satellites, a record at the time. The commercial launch business, sold through Antrix and now NewSpace India, funds a share of ISRO's science and development work.
The first Electron fails on a ground fault
The flight called "It's a Test" launched from Mahia Peninsula on 25 May 2017 and was terminated because of a glitch in ground communication equipment, not in the rocket. The next flight, in January 2018, reached orbit.
Electron reaches orbit
Nine Rutherford engines power the first stage, the first orbital engines with electric turbopumps run off lithium polymer batteries. The engine is almost entirely 3D printed and the airframe is carbon composite, so the whole vehicle masses 12.5 tonnes.
Falcon Heavy flies
Three Falcon 9 first stages strapped together flew on 6 February 2018, carrying Musk's Tesla into a heliocentric orbit. The vehicle has since launched national security payloads, GOES-U, Europa Clipper and the Roman Space Telescope.
Voyager 2 leaves the heliosphere
The second crossing, on 5 November 2018, gave a comparison point six years and a different direction from the first. Both probes found the interstellar medium denser and more magnetically turbulent than models had predicted.
LightSail 2 flies on sunlight
A crowdfunded CubeSat deployed a solar sail and raised its orbit using photon pressure alone, a proof of concept for propellantless propulsion.
Chang'e 4 lands on the far side
Chang'e 4 set down in Von Karman crater on 3 January 2019, the first landing on the lunar far side. Because the far side never faces Earth, the mission needed the Queqiao relay satellite parked beyond the Moon at Earth-Moon L2.
The first Starlink satellites go up
Sixty satellites launched on 24 May 2019 and were visible from the ground as a bright chain. Astronomers reported streaked exposures within weeks, and satellite reflectivity became a research problem rather than a curiosity.
The Chandrayaan-2 lander crashes
Vikram lost communication during the braking phase of its descent on 6 September 2019 and struck the surface. The orbiter reached lunar orbit successfully and is still mapping. ISRO traced the failure to guidance software during braking.
The US Space Force is stood up
Established on 20 December 2019 as an independent military branch. The Outer Space Treaty forbids weapons of mass destruction in orbit but not military use of space, and the line between support and weaponisation is where the argument now sits.
NASA picks Axiom for the first commercial module
The $140 million award on 28 February 2020 was the only proposal selected. Axiom's modules attach to the ISS, draw its power and life support while they are commissioned, and detach when the station is retired.
A company launches astronauts
Demo-2 lifted off on 30 May 2020, the first crewed launch from American soil since 2011 and the first ever by a private vehicle. NASA became a customer of human spaceflight rather than the only provider of it.
Crew Dragon carries astronauts
Demo-2 launched Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken on 30 May 2020, the first crewed launch from American soil since the Shuttle retired in 2011. Crew Dragon has been the primary ISS crew vehicle ever since.
The first Artemis Accords signatures
NASA, the State Department and seven other founding nations signed on 13 October 2020. Signatories commit to transparency, interoperability, registration, open data and deconfliction zones. Turkiye became the seventy-first signatory on 31 August 2026.
Chang'e 5 brings back lunar samples
Chang'e 5 returned 1.73 kilograms from Oceanus Procellarum in December 2020, the first lunar samples since 1976. The basalts dated to roughly two billion years, showing that lunar volcanism ran far longer than the Apollo samples had suggested.
Hayabusa2 returns 5.4 grams of Ryugu
Launched in 2014, the mission dropped two rovers and a lander on the asteroid, fired a copper impactor to expose subsurface material, and sampled twice. The returned grains contain amino acids and minerals formed in liquid water.
Tianwen-1 puts a rover on Mars at the first attempt
The orbiter arrived in February 2021 and the Zhurong rover landed in Utopia Planitia on 15 May. No other country had tried an orbiter, lander and rover together on a debut Mars mission. Zhurong worked for about an Earth year.
The first crewed New Shepard flight
Bezos flew on the first crewed flight on 20 July 2021. New Shepard takes passengers and research payloads past the Karman line for a few minutes of weightlessness, then lands the booster propulsively and the capsule on parachutes.
Inspiration4 flies an all-civilian crew
Four private citizens spent three days in orbit in September 2021 with no professional astronaut aboard. Axiom's ISS missions and Polaris Dawn's commercial spacewalk followed the same route through Crew Dragon.
Webb launches on Christmas Day
Twenty-five years of development and more than ten billion dollars, on a trajectory so accurate that the leftover propellant roughly doubled the projected mission life.
Ax-1 flies the first fully private ISS crew
Launched on 8 April 2022 on a Crew Dragon and returned on 25 April. Every earlier private visitor had flown as a passenger on a government mission. This one was managed end to end by a company.
A helicopter catches a returning booster
On 2 May 2022 a helicopter snagged the parachute line of a descending Electron first stage in mid-air. The catch worked, but the operational cadence never followed and Rocket Lab has since dropped the approach.
CAPSTONE goes to the Moon on a small rocket
Launched on 28 June 2022 with a Photon kick stage doing the deep-space work, CAPSTONE tested the near-rectilinear halo orbit that the Gateway station will use. It showed the company could run an interplanetary mission, not just a launch.
Artemis I flies an uncrewed Orion around the Moon
The Space Launch System flew for the first time on 16 November 2022, sending an uncrewed Orion into distant retrograde orbit around the Moon. Orion splashed down on 11 December after 25 days.
The H3 rocket fails on its first flight
H3 lifted off on 7 March 2023 and was destroyed after the second stage failed to ignite, taking an Earth observation satellite with it. The second flight succeeded in February 2024. Nine flights in, the record stands at seven successes and two failures.
JUICE departs for the Jupiter system
The Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer launched on 14 April 2023 on the second to last Ariane 5. It will arrive in 2031 and eventually orbit Ganymede, which would make it the first spacecraft to orbit a moon other than our own.
Ax-2 carries government-sponsored astronauts
Launched 21 May 2023 and docked the next day for eight days aboard the station. The business model became clear: nations without their own crew transport can sponsor astronauts and national research for a fraction of a full programme.
NASA picks Blue Moon as the second lunar lander
The Blue Origin-led National Team won the Sustaining Lunar Development contract in May 2023, alongside SpaceX's Starship. Blue Moon Mark 2 is designed to put four astronauts on the surface for up to 30 days, first on Artemis V.
Chandrayaan-3 lands near the lunar south pole
Vikram touched down on 23 August 2023, four years after the previous attempt and with the orbiter problem stripped out of the design. India became the fourth country to land softly on the Moon and the first to land in the south polar region.
Luna 25 crashes on the Moon
Russia's first lunar lander since 1976 fired its engine for too long during a pre-landing manoeuvre on 19 August 2023 and struck the surface. India landed Chandrayaan-3 near the south pole four days later.
Aditya-L1 departs for the Sun-Earth L1 point
India's first solar observatory launched on 2 September 2023 and settled into a halo orbit around L1, about 1.5 million kilometres sunward, where it watches the corona and the solar wind without interruption.
XRISM launches to redo what Hitomi lost
XRISM flew on 7 September 2023 carrying Resolve, an improved version of the microcalorimeter Hitomi barely used. It measures gas velocities, temperatures and chemical abundances in supernova remnants, active galaxies and clusters.
Ax-3 runs for three weeks
Launched 18 January 2024 and splashed down in the Atlantic after 21 days, the longest of the series. Each mission has carried a substantial research portfolio in microgravity manufacturing, life sciences and technology demonstration.
BE-4 flies on someone else's rocket
Vulcan Centaur made its first flight on 8 January 2024 with two BE-4 engines, replacing the Russian RD-180 that had powered the Atlas V for two decades. Blue Origin is now infrastructure for a competitor as well as for itself.
SLIM lands within about 55 metres of its target
SLIM touched down on 20 January 2024, a precision far beyond the kilometres-wide ellipses most landers accept. It tipped onto its side, leaving the solar panels facing away from the Sun, and still returned science during brief windows of light.
NASA contracts the vehicle that will destroy the ISS
SpaceX won an $843 million contract in June 2024 to build the US Deorbit Vehicle. Operations run through the end of 2030 and the controlled re-entry is planned for January 2031, which fixes the deadline every commercial station is working to.
Chang'e 6 returns the first far-side samples
Chang'e 6 collected material from the South Pole-Aitken Basin, the oldest and largest impact structure on the Moon, and returned it in June 2024. The samples are the first from the far side and bear on the composition of the lunar mantle.
Ariane 6 flies for the first time
Ariane 6 made its maiden flight on 9 July 2024, restoring European access to orbit after Ariane 5 retired and Vega-C was grounded. The upper stage auxiliary power unit shut down early, leaving two reentry capsules in orbit.
The launch tower catches a Super Heavy booster
On the fifth Starship flight test, 13 October 2024, the returning booster was caught between the tower arms instead of landing on legs. Removing landing hardware from the booster is central to the vehicle's cost case.
Falcon Heavy launches Europa Clipper
On 14 October 2024 the largest planetary spacecraft NASA has built left for a 2.9 billion kilometre cruise to Jupiter, arriving April 2030 for 49 flybys of Europa. It is the most ambitious outer solar system mission since Cassini.
Europa Clipper departs for Jupiter
Launched to make dozens of close passes of a moon with a global ocean under its ice. It reaches the Jupiter system in 2030 after gravity assists at Mars and Earth.
The Falcon fleet flies 165 times in a year
An annual record for any launch vehicle family, out of roughly 330 orbital attempts worldwide. A single company accounted for about half the world's launches, most of them carrying its own satellites.
New Glenn reaches orbit on its first flight
NG-1 lifted off from Cape Canaveral Launch Complex 36 on 16 January 2025 carrying the Blue Ring Pathfinder. The second stage did its job. The booster landing attempt failed, and the company had finally reached orbit after 25 years.
Slovenia becomes the twenty-third member state
Slovenia joined on 1 January 2025, following Estonia and Hungary in 2015. Canada sits on the Council under a cooperation agreement, and Cyprus, Slovakia, Latvia and Lithuania are associate members.
A second heavy-lift commercial rocket reaches orbit
New Glenn flew on 16 January 2025 and landed its booster at sea in November. Concentrating most of the world's launch capacity in one company had been the sector's obvious structural risk, and this is the first real answer to it.
Dmitry Bakanov takes over
Bakanov replaced Yury Borisov as director general on 6 February 2025. He inherited a programme still flying Soyuz reliably, still without a successful planetary mission since 2011, and still tied to an ISS partnership that both sides keep extending.
Tianwen-2 leaves for a near-Earth asteroid
Tianwen-2 launched from Xichang on a Long March 3B on 28 May 2025 and arrived at the quasi-satellite 469219 Kamo'oalewa on 4 July 2026. It samples until April 2027, returns a capsule in November 2027, then goes on to a comet.
Rocket Lab USA becomes Rocket Lab Corporation
The name changed on 23 May 2025, part of a rebuild from launch provider into an integrated space systems company. Seven acquisitions have added star trackers, separation systems, flight software, solar cells, laser terminals and robotics.
Ax-4 puts an Indian astronaut back in orbit
Launched 25 June 2025 after delays for a propellant leak and a leak in the station's Zvezda module, and splashed down 15 July. India's Shubhanshu Shukla flew as pilot, useful groundwork for ISRO's own crewed programme.
The last H-IIA flies
Flight 50 launched the GOSAT-GW greenhouse gas satellite on 29 June 2025, closing a programme that flew 50 times with 49 successes over 24 years. H3 now carries everything the older vehicle used to.
3I/ATLAS arrives from another star
The NASA-funded ATLAS survey in Rio Hurtado, Chile, reported the third known interstellar object on 1 July 2025. It reached perihelion around 30 October at 1.4 au, just inside the orbit of Mars. Interstellar material now comes to us more often than we go to it.
NISAR launches with NASA
The NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar satellite flew on a GSLV on 30 July 2025, the most expensive Earth observation mission either agency has built. It carries an American L-band radar and an Indian S-band radar and maps land and ice deformation every twelve days.
A New Glenn booster lands at sea
On 13 November 2025 the NG-2 first stage landed on the vessel Jacklyn about 600 kilometres offshore, making Blue Origin the second company ever to deliver a payload to orbit and recover the booster. The payload was NASA's ESCAPADE Mars probes.
The Bremen ministerial commits a record budget
At the council meeting on 26 and 27 November 2025 member states committed 22.3 billion euros, the largest subscription in ESA's history and 31 per cent above the 2022 round. The money funds ExoMars Rosalind Franklin for a 2028 launch, among much else.
ESCAPADE leaves for Mars
The twin spacecraft Blue and Gold launched on 13 November 2025, on a New Glenn rather than an Electron. They are loitering near Sun-Earth L2, take an Earth gravity assist in late 2026, and reach Mars in 2027 to study how the solar wind stripped its atmosphere.
A Hungarian anchor investor
The 4iG Group signed a $100 million equity investment in December 2025, paid in two tranches through March 2026, tied to the station and to an orbital data centre for processing in space. Thales Alenia has begun machining the first module's primary structure.

Neutron slips again
The medium-lift vehicle was announced in 2021 and designed for reuse from the start, with a fairing that opens and closes instead of being thrown away. Rocket Lab told investors in August 2026 that the window for a launch by year end was narrowing.
New Shepard is paused
On 30 January 2026 Blue Origin said suborbital flights would stop for at least two years so that people and money could move to the Blue Moon landers for Artemis. New Shepard had flown 38 times and carried 98 people.
The third New Glenn loses its payload
On 19 April 2026 NG-3 flew a reused NG-2 booster and landed it again, but a BE-3U upper stage engine underperformed and left AST's BlueBird 7 satellite in a 265 by 465 kilometre orbit. The satellite was deorbited.
Artemis II carries a crew around the Moon
Artemis II launched on 1 April 2026 with Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen aboard, and splashed down on 10 April after 9 days and about 1 hour 32 minutes. It was the first crewed flight beyond low Earth orbit since Apollo 17.
A New Glenn explodes on the pad
On 28 May 2026 a vehicle being prepared for an Amazon Leo launch was destroyed in a static fire test at Launch Complex 36, badly damaging Blue Origin's only operational launch site. Nobody was hurt. A BE-4 engine was confirmed as the cause in August.
SpaceX goes public
The listing put the sector's dominant company under quarterly disclosure for the first time. Its filings now report Starlink subscriber numbers and satellite counts that were previously matters of estimate.
Long March 10B flies and recovers its first stage
The maiden orbital flight on 10 July 2026 succeeded and landed the first stage on a sea platform, making China the second country to recover an orbital-class booster. A suborbital abort test of the Mengzhou capsule had flown in February.
Hayabusa2 skims an asteroid on the way to the next one
On 5 July 2026 the extended mission flew past 98943 Torifune at about 744 metres from its centre and 5.3 km/s, the closest approach any spacecraft has made to a solar system body. It reaches its final target, 1998 KY26, in July 2031.
Roman launches
The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope lifted off on 30 August 2026 on a Falcon Heavy, carrying an infrared field of view about a hundred times Hubble's for wide surveys.
