Deep Time
How did we work out how old everything is, and what came before?
The universe has a measurable age and a history with events in it. Establishing that took a century, and the earliest chapters are still being argued about.
How it runs
An expanding universe implies a beginning, because running the expansion backwards puts everything in one place at one time.
The cosmic microwave background is the direct evidence: light released when the universe first turned transparent, still arriving from every direction.
Its temperature ripples encode the composition and geometry of everything, which is how the age is pinned down rather than estimated.
Stellar evolution supplies an independent check. The oldest stars cannot be older than the universe that made them, and they are not.
The first few moments remain theory rather than observation, and the epoch when the first stars lit up is the current observational frontier.

History of Astronomy
The oldest science, and the one where the method was worked out: sustained observation, record keeping, mathematical modelling and prediction, running from cuneiform tablets to gravitational wave detectors.
Albert Einstein
Albert Einstein rewrote gravity as the shape of spacetime. General relativity, finished in 1915, is still the language every expanding universe and every black hole is described in.
Edwin Hubble
Edwin Hubble proved the spiral nebulae are galaxies of their own, then found that the farther one lies the faster it recedes. The universe acquired billions of galaxies and an expansion.
Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin
Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin worked out from stellar spectra that stars are almost entirely hydrogen and helium, then published the result with a disclaimer calling it not real, because a senior colleague told her to.
Cosmology
The universe as a single object with a history. A six-parameter model fits the microwave background, galaxy clustering, supernova distances and light element abundances at once, and still explains nothing about 95 per cent of the contents.
Stellar Evolution
How stars are born, hold themselves up, and fail. Mass at birth decides everything that follows, including which elements the star returns to the galaxy on the way out.
Stephen Hawking
Stephen Hawking showed that black holes are not black. They have a temperature, they radiate, and the contradiction that creates has driven theoretical physics for fifty years.
Cosmic Microwave Background
The oldest light there is: the thermal afterglow of the Big Bang, released when the universe cooled enough to turn transparent, and still arriving from every direction at 2.725 kelvin.
James Webb Space Telescope
A 6.5-metre segmented mirror behind a tennis-court sunshield, parked at L2 and cooled to about 40 kelvin so it can read infrared light from the first galaxies and from exoplanet air.

Babylon writes down the sky
The Mul.Apin tablets list stars along three paths and record planetary risings. The base-60 arithmetic behind the tables still governs degrees, minutes and seconds.
The Almagest fixes the model for 1,400 years
Ptolemy assembled Greek astronomy into a geocentric system of epicycles, deferents and equants that predicted planetary positions well enough for practical use, which is why it lasted.
Maragheh builds an observatory and a critique
Al-Tusi's institute produced the geometric device that generates straight-line motion from circles. The same construction turns up in Copernicus three centuries later.
De revolutionibus is published
Copernicus put the Sun at the centre and got the order and relative distances of the planets right. It was no more accurate than Ptolemy and it was far simpler in architecture.

De revolutionibus put the Sun at the centre. The model was not obviously more accurate than Ptolemy's at first, but it made the planets' retrograde loops a consequence of geometry rather than a mechanism bolted on.
The telescope arrives
Galileo published what he saw in a few months of observing. The heavens contained worlds with surfaces, satellites that did not orbit the Earth, and a Venus that went through phases.
A telescope is pointed at the sky
Galileo published mountains on the Moon, four satellites of Jupiter and the phases of Venus. The heavens turned out to contain objects with surfaces and orbits rather than perfect spheres.
The Principia unifies the physics
Newton derived Kepler's laws from an inverse-square force and made astronomy predictive. Neptune was found in 1846 within a degree of where the perturbation calculations put it.
Dark lines in the Sun
Fraunhofer catalogued more than 500 absorption features in the solar spectrum. Kirchhoff and Bunsen identified them with elements in the 1860s, and astrophysics started there.
The War of the Worlds sets the template
H.G. Wells took the supposed Martian canals, which turned out not to exist, and built the first modern alien contact narrative on them. Every invasion story since is a reply to it.
Four papers from a patent office
In one year Einstein published on the photoelectric effect, Brownian motion, special relativity, and the equivalence of mass and energy. He held no academic post at the time.
The field equations of general relativity
Ten coupled nonlinear equations relating the curvature of spacetime to the energy and momentum it contains. Gravity stopped being a force and became geometry.
Gravitational waves predicted
The equations implied that accelerating masses radiate ripples in spacetime. Einstein later doubted the waves carried energy, and the question stayed open for decades.
A constant added to hold the universe still
Applied to the whole cosmos, general relativity gave a universe that had to expand or contract. Einstein added a term to keep it static. Dark energy later gave that term a job.
Einstein applies relativity to everything at once
The field equations of 1915 turned out to describe a universe that could not sit still. Einstein added a cosmological constant to hold it static, which was a philosophical preference rather than an observation.
Eddington measures the bending of starlight
The eclipse expedition found the deflection general relativity predicted, twice the Newtonian value. Einstein became a public figure outside physics within weeks.
An Eddington lecture at Cambridge
Payne heard Arthur Eddington describe the eclipse expedition that had just confirmed general relativity. She wrote later that it gripped her so completely she could not sleep, and she switched to astronomy.
Arrival at Mount Wilson
After a Rhodes scholarship in law, a doctorate at Yerkes and infantry service in France, Hubble took a post at the observatory holding the 100-inch Hooker reflector, the largest telescope in the world.
The Great Debate
Shapley and Curtis argued at the National Academy of Sciences over whether the spiral nebulae were clouds inside the Milky Way or galaxies beyond it. Nobody could measure the distances, so nobody could settle it.
The Nobel Prize, for the photoelectric effect
The prize cited the law of the photoelectric effect and his services to theoretical physics. It did not cite relativity, which the committee still regarded as unsettled.
Cambridge to Harvard
Cambridge gave women certificates rather than degrees until 1948, and Britain offered no professional route for a woman astronomer. Payne took a fellowship to Harlow Shapley's new graduate program instead.
Stellar Atmospheres, and a retraction she did not believe
Applying the Saha ionization equation to hundreds of spectra, Payne found hydrogen roughly a million times more abundant in stars than on Earth. Henry Norris Russell called it clearly impossible, and she printed his objection as her own caveat.
Stars turn out to be mostly hydrogen
Cecilia Payne's doctoral thesis derived stellar compositions from spectra and found hydrogen dominant by orders of magnitude. She was persuaded to call the result spurious. It was not.
Andromeda is another galaxy
Hubble found Cepheid variables in M31 and applied Leavitt's relation. His figure of roughly 900,000 light years was too small, and it was still far outside the Milky Way.
Lemaitre derives the expansion and its consequence
A Belgian priest and physicist worked out the expanding solution independently and took the obvious next step: run it backwards and everything was once compressed into what he called a primeval atom.
Russell reaches the same conclusion
Working the problem independently, Russell published that stars are predominantly hydrogen and credited Payne's priority. The discovery was attributed to him anyway for decades.
Hubble measures the recession
Distances and velocities for a couple of dozen galaxies showed the two proportional. Every galaxy is receding, and the farther away it is, the faster. Space itself is stretching.
Velocity rises with distance
Combining his own distances with redshifts measured by Milton Humason and Vesto Slipher, Hubble published a linear relation between how far a galaxy is and how fast it recedes.
The universe is found to be expanding
Hubble's velocity-distance relation, measured on Mount Wilson's 100-inch, made the universe something with an age. Cosmology became a science with numbers in it.

A limit on what a dead core can hold up
Chandrasekhar calculated that electron degeneracy pressure fails above about 1.4 solar masses. The consequence, that some stars must collapse further, was resisted for decades.
A working partnership on variable stars
Payne married the Russian-born astronomer Sergei Gaposchkin. Their systematic catalogs of variables in the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds ran for decades.
The tuning fork
Hubble sorted galaxies into ellipticals, normal spirals, barred spirals and irregulars. He read it as an evolutionary sequence, which was wrong, and the classification is still in use.
The nuclear reactions are identified
Hans Bethe worked out the proton-proton chain and the carbon-nitrogen-oxygen cycle. Stars had an energy source that could last billions of years rather than millions.
Full professor, thirty-one years late
Payne-Gaposchkin became the first woman promoted to full professor in Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and the first to chair a Harvard department. Her courses had not appeared in the catalog for years.
The periodic table gets a stellar origin
Burbidge, Burbidge, Fowler and Hoyle laid out how fusion and neutron capture in stars build every element heavier than lithium. It is still the framework the subject uses.
Project Orion proposes riding nuclear bombs
General Atomics studied a ship pushed by detonating nuclear charges against a massive plate. Freeman Dyson estimated such a vehicle could reach Alpha Centauri in about 130 years at 3.3 per cent of light speed. The physics works; the engineering and the politics do not.
Diagnosed at twenty-one
A year into graduate work at Cambridge, Hawking was told he had motor neurone disease and roughly two years to live. The disease progressed unusually slowly and he lived another fifty-five.
The Partial Test Ban Treaty ends Orion
Signed on 5 August 1963, the treaty prohibits nuclear explosions in space. That removed the only propulsion concept then thought capable of a crossing within a human lifetime, and the programme was shut down.
A hiss that would not go away
Penzias and Wilson, mapping radio emission at Bell Labs, found an isotropic signal they could not eliminate. Dicke's group at Princeton, building a detector to look for exactly this, supplied the interpretation in a companion paper.
The afterglow is found
The microwave background confirmed that the universe had been hot and dense, and left the Steady State model without an explanation for a signal it had never predicted.
The Big Bang leaves a fingerprint
Penzias and Wilson found a microwave hiss coming equally from every direction. It was the cooled remnant of the hot early universe, and it settled the argument with the steady state model.
2001: A Space Odyssey gets the vacuum right
Silent space, Newtonian mechanics, centrifugal gravity, no swooping fighter craft. Kubrick and Clarke established a standard of physical realism that later space cinema is still measured against.
The Hawking-Penrose singularity theorems
Penrose had shown that collapsing stars must form singularities under general conditions. Hawking ran the argument backward in time and got the same result for the universe as a whole.
The area theorem
The total surface area of event horizons can never decrease in any classical process. The resemblance to the second law of thermodynamics was too close to be a coincidence, and Bekenstein said so.
Black Hole Explosions?
Applying quantum field theory near a horizon, Hawking found that black holes emit thermal radiation and slowly evaporate. It connected general relativity, quantum mechanics and thermodynamics in one result.
The Voyagers launch as planetary missions
Voyager 2 left on 20 August 1977 and Voyager 1 on 5 September. They were built to fly past the outer planets. Reaching escape velocity from the solar system was a consequence of the gravity assists, not a design goal.
The Nobel Prize for the discovery
Penzias and Wilson shared the physics prize. The background had already finished off the Steady State model, which predicted no such thing, and made the hot Big Bang the working picture.
Project Daedalus shows a crossing is possible on paper
The British Interplanetary Society finished a five-year design for a fusion probe running on deuterium and helium-3, accelerating to 12 per cent of light speed and reaching Barnard's Star in 50 years. It needed 50,000 tonnes of helium-3 and had no way to slow down.
Lucasian Professor of Mathematics
Hawking held the Cambridge chair previously occupied by Newton, Babbage and Dirac, and kept it for thirty years, until 2009.
Cosmos: A Personal Voyage airs
Thirteen episodes on the history of astronomy, stellar physics, the search for life and the fragility of Earth. It reached an audience in the hundreds of millions and is the reason a generation of astronomers chose the field.
Inflation solves two problems at once
Alan Guth proposed a brief burst of exponential expansion in the first fraction of a second. It explains why opposite sides of the sky are the same temperature and why space is flat, and it supplies the density seeds as stretched quantum noise.
Contact turns SETI into a novel
Sagan used the search for extraterrestrial intelligence to argue about evidence and faith rather than about aliens. The 1997 film kept the argument intact.
SN 1987A arrives with neutrinos
A supernova in the Large Magellanic Cloud, the nearest since 1604. Detectors in Japan and the United States caught a burst of neutrinos hours before the light, confirming the core collapse picture directly.
A Brief History of Time
The book spent 237 weeks on the Sunday Times bestseller list and sold over 25 million copies in more than 40 languages, which made its author the most famous scientist alive.
COBE launches
Two instruments, two results. FIRAS measured a spectrum indistinguishable from a perfect blackbody, and DMR was built to look for the departures from uniformity that structure needs.
A telescope named for him
The Hubble Space Telescope launched with the measurement of the expansion rate as a founding science goal, and its Key Project used Cepheids exactly as he had.
The first map of the fluctuations
DMR found temperature variations of about one part in 100,000 at seven degrees resolution. Crude, but they were the density seeds that everything else in the universe grew from.
The first planet around a Sun-like star
Mayor and Queloz announced 51 Pegasi b, a gas giant orbiting its star in four days. Nothing in the solar system had prepared anyone for it, and the field of exoplanets started that week.
The expansion is found to be speeding up
Two supernova teams working independently reached the same unwelcome result. Something with negative pressure dominates the energy budget, and no mainstream model had predicted it.
WMAP starts precision cosmology
Forty-five times COBE's resolution resolved the acoustic peaks. The angular scale of the first peak fixed the geometry as flat, and the relative peak heights split the contents into ordinary matter, dark matter and dark energy.
Conceding the information bet
Hawking accepted that information survives black hole evaporation, arguing from Euclidean path integrals that the process is unitary after all. The mechanism is still not settled.
Planck launches
Nine frequency bands from 30 to 857 GHz at five arcminutes, which is what it takes to separate the background from galactic dust and synchrotron emission rather than model them away.
Voyager 1 crosses the heliopause
On 25 August 2012 Voyager 1 passed out of the Sun's bubble of particles and magnetic field into the interstellar medium. Voyager 2 followed in November 2018. These remain the only direct measurements of interstellar space anyone has.
Planck publishes the parameters
The first cosmological results from the full microwave sky fixed the composition at roughly five per cent ordinary matter, twenty-seven per cent dark matter and sixty-eight per cent dark energy.
Interstellar renders a black hole from the equations
Kip Thorne supplied the general relativistic equations and the visual effects team ray-traced them rather than approximating. The renderer produced a peer-reviewed paper on lensing by spinning black holes.
A B-mode detection that was dust
BICEP2 announced a primordial polarisation signal in March. A joint analysis with Planck's dust maps concluded by January 2015 that polarised galactic dust could account for it.
The Martian makes orbital mechanics a plot device
A survival story driven by real chemistry, botany and transfer orbits, shot against actual HiRISE terrain. NASA used the release as an outreach hook rather than issuing corrections.
LIGO detects the waves he predicted
Two black holes merged 1.3 billion light years away and moved the detector arms by less than the width of a proton. The prediction was ninety-nine years old.
A channel that is not light
LIGO recorded two black holes merging. Three thousand years after the first star catalogue, astronomy acquired an entirely new way of perceiving an event.
Gravitational waves are detected
LIGO recorded the merger of two black holes as a strain of one part in 10^21 across four-kilometre arms. Astronomy acquired a channel that does not involve light.
Breakthrough Starshot is announced
Yuri Milner committed $100 million on 12 April 2016 to research a laser-driven sail: a ground array of roughly 100 gigawatts pushing gram-scale probes to about 20 per cent of light speed, a 20-year trip to Alpha Centauri. Little of that money has been spent and the programme has published nothing since 2017.
Neutron star merger makes heavy elements
The kilonova after GW170817 showed the spectral signatures of freshly made r-process elements. Gold and platinum got a confirmed production site after decades as a theoretical proposal.
Death, and Westminster Abbey
Hawking died at seventy-six. His ashes were interred between the graves of Newton and Darwin.
Planck publishes its final parameters
The full-mission analysis put the age at 13.80 billion years and the expansion rate at 67.4 km/s/Mpc, with sub-percent errors. The fit is excellent and it disagrees with the local measurement.
Voyager 2 leaves the heliosphere
The second crossing, on 5 November 2018, gave a comparison point six years and a different direction from the first. Both probes found the interstellar medium denser and more magnetically turbulent than models had predicted.
Ariane 5 launches Webb from Kourou
Lift-off on 25 December, after twenty-five years of development. The injection was accurate enough to leave far more station-keeping propellant than planned, which is why the mission life estimate doubled.
Every deployment works
Sunshield pallets, five tensioned membranes, secondary mirror tripod and both primary mirror wings unfolded over 29 days, through 344 steps with no backup. The telescope reached L2 on 24 January.
The first full-colour images
Released on 12 July: a lensing cluster deep field from 12.5 hours of exposure, a water detection in the atmosphere of WASP-96b, the Southern Ring Nebula, Stephan's Quintet and the Carina cliffs.
Carbon dioxide in an exoplanet atmosphere
The unambiguous CO2 detection in WASP-39b was the first of its kind. Later work on the same planet found sulphur dioxide, which is produced by starlight-driven chemistry rather than by inheritance.
Early galaxies come out too grown up
Spectroscopy confirmed a population of galaxies at 300 to 500 million years after the Big Bang that are more massive and more assembled than pre-launch models allowed for. The models are still being revised.
TRAPPIST-1b turns out to be bare
Thermal emission from the innermost planet of the seven-planet system is consistent with no substantial atmosphere, which is what happens when an M dwarf strips a close-in rocky world.
DESI pushes on dark energy
Baryon acoustic oscillations from over 14 million galaxies and quasars fit a constant dark energy less well than one that evolves with time. Combined with the microwave background the preference runs to about 3 sigma.
3I/ATLAS arrives from another star
The NASA-funded ATLAS survey in Rio Hurtado, Chile, reported the third known interstellar object on 1 July 2025. It reached perihelion around 30 October at 1.4 au, just inside the orbit of Mars. Interstellar material now comes to us more often than we go to it.
The Cycle 6 call goes out
Webb is observing Cycle 5 while proposals for Cycle 6 are due at the end of September 2026. Demand for time has run at roughly five times the available hours since the first cycle.
