Seeing Further
What does it take to build an eye big enough?
Astronomy advances when someone builds a better instrument. Every jump in aperture, wavelength or altitude opens a part of the universe that was simply invisible the day before.
How it runs
Galileo turned a spyglass upward and found moons around Jupiter, which is the moment observation started to outrank authority.
Bigger mirrors gathered more light, and photographic plates let an observatory keep what it saw. Astronomy became a record rather than a memory.
The atmosphere is the limit, so the answer was to leave it. Space telescopes see wavelengths the air blocks entirely and hold a steadiness no ground site can match.
Different wavelengths are different universes. X-rays show what is violent, infrared shows what is cold or distant or hidden behind dust, radio shows what is cool and vast.
Ground-based astronomy answered with adaptive optics and with arrays that combine many dishes into one aperture, and the two approaches now do different jobs rather than competing.

History of Astronomy
The oldest science, and the one where the method was worked out: sustained observation, record keeping, mathematical modelling and prediction, running from cuneiform tablets to gravitational wave detectors.
Galileo Galilei
Galileo Galilei did not invent the telescope. He pointed one at the sky, kept a systematic record of what he saw, and believed the record over two thousand years of philosophical authority.
Johannes Kepler
Johannes Kepler took the heliocentric model from Copernicus and the best observations ever made from Tycho Brahe, and turned them into the first mathematical laws of planetary motion.
Telescopes
The instruments that collect the signal. Four centuries took the field from a two-lens tube to 39-metre segmented mirrors, continent-wide interferometers and detectors that measure spacetime itself.
Isaac Newton
Isaac Newton showed that the force pulling an apple down and the force holding the Moon in orbit are the same force, and gave astronomy a theory that could predict what nobody had yet observed.

Astronomy says what is out there. Astrophysics says how it works: the physical theory that turns an arriving photon, wave or particle into a temperature, a mass, a composition and a distance.

Hubble Space Telescope
A 2.4-metre telescope in low Earth orbit that arrived with the wrong mirror shape, was repaired by hand, and became the most scientifically productive instrument ever built.
Exoplanetology
Planets around other stars. In one working lifetime the count went from zero to several thousand, and the work moved from finding them to reading the chemistry of their atmospheres.
Chandra X-ray Observatory
The sharpest X-ray telescope ever flown. It resolves the million-degree gas around black holes, in supernova remnants and between the galaxies of a cluster, at half an arcsecond.
Data Science in Astronomy
Astronomy has always been a data science. What changed is the scale: surveys now produce far more than anyone can look at, so calibration, classification and discovery are increasingly automated.
JAXA
Japan's space agency, formed in 2003 out of three older bodies, and on roughly $3 billion a year the only one to have brought samples home from two asteroids.
ALMA
Sixty-six dishes on a Chilean plateau, combined into one telescope for the cold universe: the molecular gas and dust that stars and planets are made from.
Gravitational Wave Astronomy
Astronomy without light. Kilometre-scale interferometers measure the stretching of space itself as black holes and neutron stars merge, at strains of about one part in a sextillion.
James Webb Space Telescope
A 6.5-metre segmented mirror behind a tennis-court sunshield, parked at L2 and cooled to about 40 kelvin so it can read infrared light from the first galaxies and from exoplanet air.
Celestial Objects
The taxonomy. What is actually out there, sorted by the physics that makes it rather than by how it looks: stars, remnants, planets, small bodies, nebulae, galaxies and the web they sit in.
Dark Sky Preservation
The work of keeping the night dark: shielded fixtures, warm-spectrum lamps, lighting ordinances and certified places, against skyglow that now hides the Milky Way from more than a third of humanity.
Future Missions

Babylon writes down the sky
The Mul.Apin tablets list stars along three paths and record planetary risings. The base-60 arithmetic behind the tables still governs degrees, minutes and seconds.
Hipparchus ranks the stars by brightness
Six magnitude classes, brightest to faintest visible. The scale survived unchanged for two thousand years because it was good enough, and it survives now because it was made logarithmic rather than replaced.
The Almagest fixes the model for 1,400 years
Ptolemy assembled Greek astronomy into a geocentric system of epicycles, deferents and equants that predicted planetary positions well enough for practical use, which is why it lasted.
Maragheh builds an observatory and a critique
Al-Tusi's institute produced the geometric device that generates straight-line motion from circles. The same construction turns up in Copernicus three centuries later.
De revolutionibus is published
Copernicus put the Sun at the centre and got the order and relative distances of the planets right. It was no more accurate than Ptolemy and it was far simpler in architecture.
The chair of mathematics at Padua
Galileo spent eighteen years at Padua, which he later called the happiest of his life, working on motion, mechanics and the strength of materials before he ever built a telescope.
Mysterium Cosmographicum
Kepler proposed that the spacing of the six known planets came from nesting the five Platonic solids between their orbits. The answer was wrong. The ambition brought him to Tycho Brahe's attention.
Assistant to Tycho Brahe in Prague
Tycho held the most precise observations in history, accumulated by naked eye over decades. He died in 1601, and Kepler inherited the Mars data that would break the circular orbit.
A spectacle maker files a patent
Hans Lippershey applied for a patent on a tube with two lenses that magnified about three times. Several Dutch craftsmen appear to have had the same idea at the same time, and it was sold as a military instrument.
A Dutch invention, rebuilt and improved
Hearing of a device that made distant things look near, Galileo built his own within months and pushed the magnification from roughly 3x to about 20x by grinding better lenses.
Astronomia Nova, and the first two laws
Years of failed circular fits ended with an ellipse and the Sun at one focus. The second law followed: a planet sweeps equal areas in equal times, so it moves faster when it is closer.
The Milky Way resolves into stars
Galileo found the band of light was made of individual stars too faint to separate by eye. The first entry in the taxonomy stopped being a substance and became a population.
The telescope arrives
Galileo published what he saw in a few months of observing. The heavens contained worlds with surfaces, satellites that did not orbit the Earth, and a Venus that went through phases.

Sidereus Nuncius reported mountains on the Moon, four satellites of Jupiter and the resolution of the Milky Way into stars. He had ground his own lenses to about twenty times magnification.

Dioptrice
The first systematic treatment of lenses, written after Galileo published his telescopic observations. It described the two convex lens astronomical telescope now called the Keplerian design.
Heliocentrism declared formally heretical
The Church instructed Galileo to abandon the idea. He complied in public for sixteen years, and Copernicus's book went on the Index in the same year.
Harmonices Mundi, and the third law
The square of a planet's orbital period is proportional to the cube of its semi-major axis. This was the relation Newton used to pull the inverse-square law out of the sky.
The Inquisition, and house arrest
A year after the Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, Galileo was found vehemently suspect of heresy, made to recant, and confined to his villa at Arcetri for the rest of his life.
Two New Sciences
Written blind and under house arrest, his last book gathered a lifetime on motion and material strength, including the result that bodies accelerate alike regardless of their mass.
The plague years at Woolsthorpe
Cambridge closed and Newton went home for roughly eighteen months. In that time he worked out the method of fluxions, the composition of white light, and the beginnings of universal gravitation.
Newton replaces the lens with a mirror
A curved primary mirror bends all colours by the same amount, which removes chromatic aberration outright. The Newtonian layout is still the standard amateur reflector.
The reflecting telescope and the first paper on light
Newton's reflector, built to avoid the chromatic aberration of lenses, brought him into the Royal Society. His first published paper argued that white light is a mixture of colors, not a pure thing that prisms stain.
The Principia unifies the physics
Newton derived Kepler's laws from an inverse-square force and made astronomy predictive. Neptune was found in 1846 within a degree of where the perturbation calculations put it.
Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica
Three laws of motion and one law of gravitation, from which Newton derived planetary orbits, cometary paths, the tides, the oblate shape of the Earth and the precession of the equinoxes.
Opticks
Written in English rather than Latin and organized around experiments anyone could repeat, it set the standard for how optical research was reported for the next century.
Halley's comet returns on schedule
Edmond Halley, who had paid for the Principia out of his own pocket, used Newton's methods to predict the comet's return. It arrived thirty-one years after Newton's death, exactly as calculated.
Messier finishes his catalogue of nuisances
A comet hunter listed 103 fuzzy objects so he would stop mistaking them for comets. The list turned out to contain galaxies, nebulae and star clusters, and it is still used every clear night.
Herschel finds a planet with a homemade reflector
Uranus was the first planet discovered rather than inherited. Herschel went on to build larger and larger mirrors and to survey the sky systematically, which made observational astronomy quantitative.
Dark lines in the Sun
Fraunhofer catalogued more than 500 absorption features in the solar spectrum. Kirchhoff and Bunsen identified them with elements in the 1860s, and astrophysics started there.

Neptune found where gravity said to look
Unexplained wobbles in the orbit of Uranus led Le Verrier and Adams to predict an unseen planet. Johann Galle found it within a degree of the predicted position.
The magnitude scale gets a definition
Pogson fixed five magnitudes as exactly a factor of 100 in brightness, making an ancient eyeball ranking into a measurable logarithmic quantity.
Spectral lines identify elements
Kirchhoff and Bunsen showed that each element makes a unique pattern of lines, and that the pattern is the same in a laboratory flame as in a star. Physics was demonstrated to be the same everywhere.
Spectroscopy splits the nebulae
William Huggins found that some nebulae show bright emission lines, so they are glowing gas, while others show a continuous spectrum and must be unresolved stars. Two different objects had shared one name.
An element is found in the Sun first
A yellow line in the solar spectrum matched nothing known on Earth. Helium was named for the Sun and was not isolated in a laboratory for another twenty-seven years.
The Hooker 100-inch opens on Mount Wilson
George Ellery Hale's third and largest reflector. Within a decade Edwin Hubble used it to resolve Cepheids in Andromeda and to measure the recession of galaxies.
Stellar composition is read from spectra
Payne applied ionisation theory to stellar spectra and found hydrogen dominant. Applying laboratory physics to starlight had produced a result nobody expected and nobody could reach any other way.
The spiral nebulae are other galaxies
Edwin Hubble's Cepheid distances to Andromeda put it far outside the Milky Way. The universe acquired a scale above the galaxy, and the argument over what the nebulae were ended.
The universe is found to be expanding
Hubble's velocity-distance relation, measured on Mount Wilson's 100-inch, made the universe something with an age. Cosmology became a science with numbers in it.
Radio astronomy starts by accident
Karl Jansky, hired by Bell Labs to find the sources of shortwave interference, traced a steady hiss to the centre of the Milky Way. A whole spectrum nobody had looked in was suddenly available.
Starts an astronomy club at eleven
Living in Reno, Nevada, under a dark sky at the edge of town, Roman organized a club with her classmates and worked through a book on constellations and celestial objects. She never lost the interest, despite two decades of adults telling her that science was not for girls.
The Hale 200-inch is dedicated at Palomar
Its five-metre Pyrex blank took eleven years to grind and polish, and it stayed the largest effective optical telescope in the world for decades. Monolithic mirrors get impractical not much beyond it.
Doctorate from the University of Chicago
After a bachelor's degree in astronomy from Swarthmore in 1946, earned at the college's Sproul Observatory, she took her PhD at Chicago, whose graduate astronomy program ran out of Yerkes Observatory in Williams Bay, Wisconsin. She stayed on at Yerkes for six more years.
Links stellar chemistry to stellar motion
Handed the sun-like F5 to G5 stars nobody else wanted, Roman found that those with weaker lines from elements heavier than helium had a far wider spread of velocities and sat further off the plane of the Milky Way. Chemistry records when a star formed; orbit records where. Published in the Astrophysical Journal, received 22 July 1950.
The changed spectrum of AG Draconis
Observing at McDonald Observatory in September 1952, Roman found that the tenth-magnitude object BD+67 922, now known as AG Draconis, had changed almost beyond recognition since the 1940s: an emission continuum swamping all but the heaviest absorption lines. The note raised her profile in the field.
Leaves Yerkes for the Naval Research Laboratory
Told plainly that a woman had no path to tenure, she took a job in the new field of radio astronomy at NRL, mapped the galaxy at 67 centimeters, and rose to head the microwave spectroscopy section. Four years in an engineering shop taught her how flight projects are actually built.
Sputnik 1 goes up
An 83-kilogram sphere circling the Earth every 96 minutes and beeping. Amateur radio operators everywhere could hear it, which was much of the point.
A quiet zone is set aside for radio astronomy
The United States restricted transmissions across 13,000 square miles around Green Bank in West Virginia. Radio astronomy is the only science that needed a legal silence to work in.
The Space Act creates a civilian agency
Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act on 29 July 1958. NASA opened on 1 October, absorbing the NACA laboratories and their staff. Making it civilian rather than military allowed open publication and foreign partnership.
NASA's first Chief of Astronomy
Approached after a lecture by Harold Urey and asked whether she knew anyone who might build a space astronomy program, she applied herself. She joined six months after the agency opened, becoming its first Chief of Astronomy and the first woman to hold an executive position at NASA. Taking the job ended her own research.
Gagarin completes one orbit
One hundred and eight minutes, and the first human being to leave the atmosphere. Kennedy committed the United States to a lunar landing within six weeks of it.
The Orbiting Solar Observatories begin flying
John Lindsay's spinning-wheel design pointed two instrument boxes at the Sun, the easiest target in the sky to lock onto, so the OSOs flew years ahead of the harder pointed telescopes. Eight launched between March 1962 and June 1975, covering a full eleven-year solar cycle.
Quasars are placed at cosmological distance
The strange lines in 3C 273 turned out to be ordinary hydrogen, redshifted enormously. That made the object billions of light years away and absurdly luminous, which required a new energy source.
Orbiting Astronomical Observatories, two of four
Four experiments proposed during the International Geophysical Year were flown on a common spacecraft that had to point accurately anywhere in the sky. Four OAOs launched between 1966 and 1972 and only two worked, which was a poor procurement record and a decisive proof that a pointed telescope in orbit could do real astronomy.
A new class of object arrives as a pulse
Jocelyn Bell Burnell found a radio source repeating every 1.3 seconds. Pulsars turned out to be rotating neutron stars, which had been a theoretical proposal for thirty years.
The CCD is invented
Bell Labs built a device that converts photons to electrons linearly and with better than 90 per cent efficiency. Photographic plates managed one to three per cent and were not linear at all.
ESO opens La Silla
The first European observatory in Chile. The Atacama's combination of altitude, aridity and more than 300 clear nights a year has since made it the centre of ground-based astronomy.
Apollo 11 lands on the Moon
Armstrong and Aldrin landed in the Sea of Tranquillity on 20 July 1969, eight years after Kennedy set the deadline. Five more landings followed. Twelve people walked on the surface and brought back 382 kilograms of rock and soil.

Two and a half hours on the surface, 21.5 kilograms of samples, and an estimated 600 million people watching. The programme employed over 400,000 people at its peak.
A Nobel Prize for aperture synthesis
Martin Ryle was recognised for the technique of combining antennas so that Earth's rotation traces out the baselines of an aperture nobody could build.
Ten states sign the ESA Convention
ESA was formed on 30 May 1975 by merging ESRO, which did space research, with ELDO, which built launchers. The ten founding members were Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
The Voyagers launch
Two spacecraft aimed at a planetary alignment that recurs every 175 years. They are both still transmitting from interstellar space, with instruments being switched off one at a time to save power.
Retires from NASA
She left during an early-out window, partly to care for her mother. Edward Weiler, her successor as Chief of Astronomy, coined the phrase "mother of Hubble." She then worked half-time for nearly two more decades, ending up effectively running the science side of Goddard's Astronomical Data Center.
Challenger breaks up after launch
Challenger was destroyed 73 seconds into flight on 28 January 1986, killing all seven aboard including the teacher Christa McAuliffe. The Rogers Commission traced it to a failed solid rocket booster seal and to a launch decision made over engineering objections.
Neutrinos confirm a core collapse
Detectors caught about two dozen neutrinos from SN 1987A hours before the light arrived, exactly as the collapse mechanism predicted. A non-electromagnetic messenger settled a theoretical argument.
The International Dark-Sky Association is founded
Set up in Tucson by the astronomer David Crawford and the physician Tim Hunter, close to the observatories the city's lighting codes were written to protect. The board voted to rename it DarkSky International in 2022 and announced the change on 1 June 2023.
Discovery carries Hubble to orbit
Launched on 24 April after more than a decade of delays and near-cancellations. Low Earth orbit was chosen deliberately, so that shuttle crews could reach the telescope and replace its instruments.
The Great Observatories begin with Hubble
NASA's plan was four telescopes covering four parts of the spectrum. Compton followed in 1991, Chandra in 1999 and Spitzer in 2003, and the case for multiwavelength work stopped being theoretical.
Hubble reaches orbit
The idea dated to a 1946 paper by Lyman Spitzer. Getting an observatory above the atmosphere took forty-four years, and then a repair mission three years after that.
The mirror is the wrong shape
A flawed null corrector had been used to test the primary during grinding. The surface was off by roughly a fiftieth of the width of a human hair, enough to spread every star into a halo.
Doctorate at Caltech
Ghez worked under Gerry Neugebauer on high-resolution infrared observations of young stellar objects, learning to see through the dust that hides most of the galaxy.
The first confirmed planets are around a pulsar
Timing variations in the millisecond pulsar PSR 1257+12 revealed two planets, later three. They probably formed from supernova debris, and they remain among the strangest systems known.
The Church concedes the point
Pope John Paul II acknowledged that the theologians who condemned Galileo had failed to distinguish scripture from science. The admission took 359 years.
Five spacewalks fix it
STS-61 installed COSTAR, a set of corrective mirrors, and a replacement camera with the correction built in. The aberration had been characterised precisely, which is why it could be cancelled precisely.
To UCLA, and the galactic center
She joined the faculty at twenty-nine and started tracking stars near Sagittarius A*, in direct competition with Reinhard Genzel's group using the VLT in Chile.
51 Pegasi b breaks every expectation
Mayor and Queloz announced a Jupiter-mass planet in a four-day orbit around a Sun-like star on 6 October. Nothing in the solar system suggested a gas giant could be there.
Ten days on an empty patch of sky
The Hubble Deep Field stacked 342 exposures of a piece of Ursa Major chosen for having nothing in it. It came back with about 3,000 galaxies, most of them billions of light years away.
Ariane 5 fails on its first flight
Flight 501 broke up 37 seconds after liftoff on 4 June 1996, destroyed by reused inertial reference software that overflowed on a number the new rocket produced and the old one had not. Ariane 5 went on to fly until 2023.
Hipparcos publishes the first space astrometry catalogue
Positions and parallaxes for over 100,000 stars at milliarcsecond precision, from above the atmosphere. It rebuilt the bottom of the distance scale.
The expansion turns out to be accelerating
Two competing teams found distant Type Ia supernovae fainter than a decelerating universe predicts. Hubble supplied the photometry that ground telescopes could not measure accurately enough.
Columbia carries Chandra to orbit
Deployed from the shuttle payload bay on STS-93 and boosted by an Inertial Upper Stage into a 64-hour elliptical orbit that spends most of each circuit above the radiation belts.
First light on Cassiopeia A
The opening images, released on 26 August, showed the remnant of a 300-year-old supernova and a distant quasar. A point source sat at the centre of Cas A that no earlier X-ray telescope could have separated out.
SDSS makes a survey into a database
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey started operations and eventually catalogued photometry for over 500 million objects and spectra for more than five million, queryable by anyone.
The ISS takes on its first crew
Expedition 1 arrived on 2 November 2000. The station has been continuously inhabited ever since, orbiting at roughly 408 kilometres and circling Earth about every 92 minutes. NASA, Roscosmos, ESA, JAXA and CSA run it together.
The ISS is continuously occupied
Since November 2000 there has been at least one person off the planet at all times. Over 270 people from 21 countries have been aboard.
Flagstaff becomes the first Dark Sky City
Flagstaff, Arizona, was recognised in 2001 for its outdoor lighting policy and fixture retrofits, done to protect Lowell Observatory. The International Dark Sky Places programme was created to give other towns the same incentive.
Columbia is lost on re-entry
Columbia broke apart over Texas on 1 February 2003, killing seven. Foam shed at launch had holed the wing leading edge. The accident board found the same institutional pattern the Rogers Commission had described seventeen years earlier.
Three agencies merge into JAXA
ISAS, which flew scientific missions on solid rockets, NASDA, which built applications satellites on liquid ones, and the aeronautics laboratory NAL became a single agency on 1 October 2003. Japan had reached orbit on its own in February 1970.
The Ultra Deep Field goes deeper
A longer exposure in Fornax reached galaxies seen when the universe was a few hundred million years old. The deep fields together turned galaxy evolution into a statistical subject.
The definition of planet is written down
The International Astronomical Union required a planet to orbit the Sun, be round, and have cleared its orbital neighbourhood. Pluto failed the third test and dwarf planets became a category.
The Bullet Cluster separates mass from gas
Two clusters had passed through each other. The hot gas, which carries most of the ordinary matter, was left behind in the middle. The lensing mass went straight on with the galaxies.
Crowdsourcing gets a million galaxies classified
Galaxy Zoo showed that the bottleneck in survey science was human throughput, not human ability. It also produced the labels that trained the classifiers which replaced it.
A planet hunter carries his name
NASA launched the Kepler telescope, which watched one patch of sky for the tiny regular dimming of transits and turned exoplanet discovery from an event into a survey.
Kepler stares at one patch of sky
Four years of continuous photometry on more than 150,000 stars, yielding 2,662 confirmed planets. It established that small planets outnumber large ones and that multi-planet systems are ordinary.
Planck launches to map the microwave background
Planck flew on 14 May 2009 alongside Herschel. It measured the cosmic microwave background more precisely than anything before it, fixing the age of the universe at about 13.8 billion years and its composition at 5 per cent ordinary matter.
The last servicing mission
STS-125 installed Wide Field Camera 3 and the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph, repaired two instruments that had failed, and replaced all six gyroscopes. NASA had cancelled the flight after Columbia and reinstated it under public pressure.
Hayabusa brings back the first asteroid grains
The capsule landed in the Australian outback on 13 June 2010 with microscopic grains from asteroid Itokawa. The spacecraft had survived a solar flare, a failed reaction wheel, a fuel leak and seven weeks out of contact to get there and back.
The Shuttle flies for the last time
Atlantis landed on 21 July 2011, ending 135 missions flown since 1981. The Shuttle never made spaceflight routine or cheap, but nothing else could have assembled the ISS or serviced Hubble in orbit.
ALMA opens its eyes
Early Science began with roughly a third of the array in place. The first released image, the colliding Antennae Galaxies, already showed molecular gas in more detail than every previous submillimetre telescope combined.
The array is inaugurated
All 66 antennas were in place on the plateau at 5,058 metres, funded jointly by ESO, the US National Science Foundation and Japan's National Institutes of Natural Sciences, with Chile guaranteed a share of the time.
Cassiopeia A in three dimensions
A deep observation used Doppler shifts in the X-ray lines to give line-of-sight velocities for each ejecta knot, turning a flat image into a map of an explosion that was never spherically symmetric.
Gaia launches to survey the Galaxy
Launched on 19 December 2013, Gaia measures stellar positions, distances and motions at microarcsecond precision. Its catalogues of nearly two billion sources underpin the distance ladder, Milky Way archaeology and asteroid orbit work alike.
HL Tauri resets planet formation
The Long Baseline Campaign imaged a star less than a million years old surrounded by concentric rings and cleared gaps. Theory had put that structuring several million years later.
Philae lands on a comet
Rosetta released the Philae lander onto Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko on 12 November 2014, the first soft landing on a comet nucleus. Rosetta itself found molecular oxygen in the coma, which no model had predicted.
A second channel opens
Detecting a black hole merger in gravitational waves gave the field information about an event that emitted no light at all. Multi-messenger work became a method rather than an aspiration.

A 500-metre dish built into a natural sinkhole, trading steerability for collecting area. It is the largest filled-aperture radio telescope in the world and has found hundreds of pulsars.

Five months of checking later, the collaboration published. The ringdown matched the predicted modes of a Kerr black hole, so the result confirmed both the waves and the objects at once.
Hitomi is lost five weeks after launch
A chain of attitude control errors spun the X-ray observatory apart in late March 2016. In its brief working life it observed the Perseus cluster once, and that single dataset showed the hot gas in clusters is far quieter than models predicted.

ALMA's collecting area exceeds that of every other Event Horizon Telescope station combined, so it anchors every baseline it joins. The result was the first image of the region around a black hole's event horizon.

The Event Horizon Telescope correlated millimetre stations from Hawaii to the South Pole for roughly 20 microarcseconds of resolution, which is a newspaper in New York read from Paris.
The first Starlink satellites appear as a train
Sixty satellites launched on 24 May 2019 and were immediately visible as a bright chain crossing the sky. Wide-field surveys started reporting streaked exposures, and the reflectivity of spacecraft became an astronomical problem for the first time.
Schwarzschild precession measured
The orbit does not close on itself. It rotates slightly with each pass, exactly as general relativity requires in a field this strong.
WFIRST is renamed for her
On 20 May 2020 NASA announced that the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope would become the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. Release 20-054 quotes Barbara Mikulski, who fought for Hubble in the Senate, calling it well deserved.

Hayabusa2 returns 5.4 grams of Ryugu
Launched in 2014, the mission dropped two rovers and a lander on the asteroid, fired a copper impactor to expose subsurface material, and sampled twice. The returned grains contain amino acids and minerals formed in liquid water.

Lift-off on 25 December, after twenty-five years of development. The injection was accurate enough to leave far more station-keeping propellant than planned, which is why the mission life estimate doubled.

Sagittarius A* gets its portrait
The same network turned on the Milky Way's own supermassive black hole, a far harder target because the gas orbits it in minutes rather than days and the picture will not hold still.
Gaia DR3 adds spectra to the census
Astrophysical parameters, radial velocities and low-resolution spectra for a large fraction of the catalogue. Cross-matching against it became a standard first step in almost any study.

Early galaxies come out too grown up
Spectroscopy confirmed a population of galaxies at 300 to 500 million years after the Big Bang that are more massive and more assembled than pre-launch models allowed for. The models are still being revised.
TRAPPIST-1b turns out to be bare
Thermal emission from the innermost planet of the seven-planet system is consistent with no substantial atmosphere, which is what happens when an M dwarf strips a close-in rocky world.
Citizen star counts show the sky brightening at 9.6 per cent a year
Kyba and colleagues converted a decade of Globe at Night naked-eye star counts into a skyglow trend and found 9.6 per cent a year across Europe and North America, against roughly 2 per cent measured from orbit. Satellites are missing most of the change.
The H3 rocket fails on its first flight
H3 lifted off on 7 March 2023 and was destroyed after the second stage failed to ignite, taking an Earth observation satellite with it. The second flight succeeded in February 2024. Nine flights in, the record stands at seven successes and two failures.
JUICE departs for the Jupiter system
The Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer launched on 14 April 2023 on the second to last Ariane 5. It will arrive in 2031 and eventually orbit Ganymede, which would make it the first spacecraft to orbit a moon other than our own.

Pulsar timing finds a nanohertz background
NANOGrav and three other timing arrays announced correlated timing deviations across millisecond pulsars, consistent with the combined hum of supermassive black hole binaries across the sky.
Euclid launches to map the dark universe
Launched on 1 July 2023 on a Falcon 9 and stationed at Sun-Earth L2, Euclid is building a three-dimensional map covering a third of the sky and ten billion light-years, using weak lensing and galaxy clustering.
XRISM launches to redo what Hitomi lost
XRISM flew on 7 September 2023 carrying Resolve, an improved version of the microcalorimeter Hitomi barely used. It measures gas velocities, temperatures and chemical abundances in supernova remnants, active galaxies and clusters.
ESA adopts LISA
The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna was formally approved on 25 January 2024: three spacecraft 2.5 million kilometres apart, six laser links, launching on an Ariane 6 in 2035. Construction began in June 2025.

SLIM lands within about 55 metres of its target
SLIM touched down on 20 January 2024, a precision far beyond the kilometres-wide ellipses most landers accept. It tipped onto its side, leaving the solar panels facing away from the Sun, and still returned science during brief windows of light.
Hubble goes to one-gyro mode
Three of the six gyroscopes installed in 2009 have now had a flex lead fail. Science resumed pointing on a single gyro, with one held in reserve, at the cost of slower slews and less sky available at any moment.
Ariane 6 flies for the first time
Ariane 6 made its maiden flight on 9 July 2024, restoring European access to orbit after Ariane 5 retired and Vega-C was grounded. The upper stage auxiliary power unit shut down early, leaving two reentry capsules in orbit.
Europa Clipper departs for Jupiter
Launched on 14 October 2024 on a Falcon Heavy for a 2.9 billion kilometre cruise. It reaches Jupiter in April 2030 and will make 49 close flybys of Europa, running all nine instruments on every pass.

Chandra went through NASA's 2025 senior review of operating missions and continues in extended operations, twenty-six years into a five-year design life. No approved successor matches its resolution.
Slovenia becomes the twenty-third member state
Slovenia joined on 1 January 2025, following Estonia and Hungary in 2015. Canada sits on the Council under a cooperation agreement, and Cyprus, Slovakia, Latvia and Lithuania are associate members.
Rubin Observatory releases its first imagery
On 23 June 2025, after just over ten hours of test observations, Rubin published images containing millions of galaxies and stars and thousands of asteroids. The ten-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time follows.
The last H-IIA flies
Flight 50 launched the GOSAT-GW greenhouse gas satellite on 29 June 2025, closing a programme that flew 50 times with 49 successes over 24 years. H3 now carries everything the older vehicle used to.
Rubin Observatory shows its first look
The Cerro Pachon telescope released its opening images on 23 June, ahead of survey operations. Its camera photographs the southern sky in a few nights and then does it again.
The Bremen ministerial commits a record budget
At the council meeting on 26 and 27 November 2025 member states committed 22.3 billion euros, the largest subscription in ESA's history and 31 per cent above the 2022 round. The money funds ExoMars Rosalind Franklin for a 2028 launch, among much else.
Artemis II carries a crew around the Moon
Artemis II launched on 1 April 2026 with Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen aboard, and splashed down on 10 April after 9 days and about 1 hour 32 minutes. It was the first crewed flight beyond low Earth orbit since Apollo 17.
The catalogue passes 390 events
GWTC-5.0, released on 26 May, added 161 events from the fourth observing run. Detection has gone from a singular result to a population study in about a decade.
Rubin starts producing ten terabytes a night
The Legacy Survey of Space and Time began, with alerts on anything that changed brightness pushed out to broker systems within a minute of the shutter closing.

NOIRLab announced on 30 June 2026 that the Legacy Survey of Space and Time had officially started. For the next decade Rubin photographs the southern sky every few nights and issues roughly ten million alerts a night for anything that moved or changed.

Hayabusa2 skims an asteroid on the way to the next one
On 5 July 2026 the extended mission flew past 98943 Torifune at about 744 metres from its centre and 5.3 km/s, the closest approach any spacecraft has made to a solar system body. It reaches its final target, 1998 KY26, in July 2031.

Roman flew on 30 August 2026 on a Falcon Heavy toward Sun-Earth L2. Its mirror matches Hubble's 2.4 metres but its field of view is about a hundred times wider, which is what makes wide-area dark energy and microlensing surveys possible.

Liftoff at 7:26 a.m. EDT on 30 August 2026, aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy from Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center. The observatory separated cleanly, deployed its high-gain antenna and aperture cover, powered on its coronagraph on 1 September, and entered a commissioning period on the way to L2. First science images are expected in early 2027.

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope lifted off on 30 August 2026 on a Falcon Heavy, carrying an infrared field of view about a hundred times Hubble's for wide surveys.
The archive passes 6,300 confirmed planets
The NASA Exoplanet Archive listed 6,360 confirmed planets on 7 September 2026. Thirty-one years after the first around a Sun-like star, the count still rises most weeks.
